The Tigers’ swim team overcame their opponents by a landslide at a home meet against Blair on Thursday, March 30. The swimmers took the easy victory as an opportunity to try out new events. The win served as a slight confidence boost after the team’s loss earlier this week.
The girls’ varsity team won with a final score of 140-15 while the boys’ varsity team scored 129-37. The girls’ junior varsity team finished with an impressive 110-0 and the JV boys won 122-6.
The coaches observed that because the swimmers were under less pressure than usual, there seemed to be few highlights from the varsity teams. The varsity swimmers experimented with different strokes in the relaxed environment.
However, many JV swimmers were able to break personal records and swim in new events. Coaches were especially impressed by freshman Winston Qia’s performance, even calling him the top JV swimmer so far this season. Freshman Evan Kowel also made an impression on his teammates and coaches by swimming in a full schedule of events, including the 500 varsity Freestyle and 200 Freestyle, taking first in the latter.
Coach Julie commended freshman Carly Rodriguez for winning the 200 Individual Medley, a notoriously tough event, for the second time in a row. Freshman Rebecca Wong feels she has “found her stroke” after winning the 100 Breaststroke.
“It went really well. We won almost every event!” said sophomore Ryan Liu on the overwhelming victory.
The team will continue practicing over spring break in order to stay in shape for their next meet at Temple City on Thursday, April 13.
