On Wednesday, April 22, South Pasadena Girls’ Track defended its title as league champions for the second year in a row, crushing Monrovia and San Marino at an eventful Tri-Meet hosted at Monrovia High School.
In shot put, senior Elizabeth Rosenberg took second place but came back for the win in the discus, followed by her teammate junior Daphne Solorzano in third. In both high jump and pole vault, junior Lily Kimura took first alongside her teammate, senior Madeline Park, who took first in long jump and triple jump.
On the track, the girls’ team competed in the 200-meter race, with juniors Kara Want and Evan Taylor, taking first and third. In the 400-meter race, junior Raquel Kelly Gerakos took second place. The distance events included the 800-meter, where South Pas took first and second with freshmen Harriet Godson and Sophia Tam. During the 1600-meter race, freshman Anna McDonnell took second, while her teammate, sophomore Layla Lee, took third. As for the hurdles, senior Anna Kowal took second in the 300-meter hurdles, but snatched the win in the 100-meter hurdles. Finally, the 4×400-meter relay team composed of Lee, McDonnell, Godson, and Tam, took second place.
The Tigers’ next meet was league prelims and league finals, where they competed to qualify for CIF. After that, the post-season CIF journey will begin, where the boys’ team is expected to go to state, with certain individuals advancing as far as Nationals.
