The SPHS girls’ tennis team swiftly defeated Garden Grove High School in their second CIF playoff game on Friday, November 2. The girls will be moving onto the quarterfinals with their 14-4 win.

The singles squad only lost two sets, easily shutting down Garden Grove’s players. Singles one, senior Shannon Huang, lost her first set 6-4, but quickly redoubled her efforts, winning her next two sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Sophomore Carissa Park, singles two, had little trouble picking up all three of her games. Park emerged victorious with a score of 7-6 in her first set tiebreaker and garnered two additional wins, 6-4 and 6-1. Senior Rachel Park, singles three, grabbed two sets 6-3, but lost her third set 6-1.

Demonstrating their potential, the doubles squad also dropped just two sets to Garden Grove. Doubles team one, junior Teryn Kum and sophomore Skylar Cornforth, found little resistance in their opponents, winning three straight sets 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0. Senior Sheila Li and senior Lena Kushigemachi, doubles team two, won one set in extra games with a score of 7-5, an additional set 6-0, but could not secure their third set, losing 6-2. After attaining a win in their first set with a 7-6 score, doubles team three, sophomores Olivia Reed and Kimberly Hsueh, could not lock down their second set, losing 6-4. The team rebounded and won their third set 6-3.

The girls’ team will play away on Monday, November 5, against Huntington Beach High School. A win would guarantee a spot in the CIF semifinals.
