Girls tennis falls to La Cañada in first league match

The girls tennis team was defeated by La Cañada High School in their first Rio Hondo league match of the season. The match was held at La Cañada and the Tigers lost 13-5.

Sophomore captain Maya Oniciuc lost in her first two singles sets, 2-6 and 3-6, but came back to win her last set 6-1. Junior Gwen Culbert lost 0-6 and 4-6, but ended with a 6-2 victory in her last set. Sophomore Emi Fong was able to win her two latter sets 6-0 and 6-2 after losing her first 0-6. Altogether, Oniciuc, Culbert, and Fong won four of the nine sets played.

The three doubles teams were beaten by La Cañada 8-1 in the doubles sets, only winning one of the nine.

Senior captain Isha Zafra and junior Claire Chen played strong through their three sets, but unfortunately lost 3-6, 1-6, and 3-6. Likewise, doubles two, made up of junior Meryl Timmerman and sophomore Mailani Ramos-Platt lost their three sets. 

Juniors Chloe Luong and Cleo Reeves were able to pull off a huge win in their first set against La Cañada, winning 6-1 and securing the Tigers their one and only doubles win. In their second set, they narrowly lost 4-6. Luong and Reeves lost their final set 3-6 to close out the doubles matches.

The Tigers’ next match will be on Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m. against Monrovia High School at home.
