Cross country triumphs at CIF Prelims

South Pasadena’s varsity cross country teams were back at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday, Nov. 16 for the CIF Southern Section Prelims, delivering a dominant performance. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams took first place in their respective Division III races, advancing them to the CIF Southern Section Finals. Throughout the both races, the Tigers showcased their resilience and teamwork, pushing each other to excel in the season’s latest race.

From the girls’ team, senior Saidbh Byrne and senior Abigail Errington stuck together and pushed each other through the final stretch, and finished first and second respectively. They both clocked in at 18:03, but their placing came down to the millisecond. 

Similarly, senior Sophia Humphrey and senior Maya Lee placed 12th and 13th respectively, but both finished with a time of 19:32. Senior pair Chloe Koo and Amelie Geoffron finished back-to-back with times of 20:03 and 20:06 respectively, rounding out the top 20 for the girls’ division. Overall, the girls’ team dominated their heat, beating out the second place team by over 40 points.

From the boys’ team, sophomore Michael Scarince finished in sixth, senior Noah Aldana finished in seventh, and junior Dylan Shugg finished in eighth. The trio clocked in with consecutive times of 16:09, 16:11, and 16:17, respectively. 

Similarly, senior Adam Ruiz, senior Ethan Kung, and junior Kai Tilley placed consecutively, rounding out the top 20 for the boys’ division. The trio finished at the same time of 16:49, with their placing coming down to the millisecond. Overall, the boys’ team dominated their heat as well.

The Tigers are looking forward to returning to Mt. San Antonio College for CIF Finals on Saturday, Nov. 23, and hopefully to Woodward Park for State Championships on Saturday, Nov. 30.
