On Monday, April 13, the South Pasadena varsity boys’ tennis team defeated Crescenta Valley 10–8.
Number one singles player, junior Sean Kim, lost his first set against Crescenta Valley’s number one 6–3, but won his next two sets 6–2 and 6–0.
Sophomore Brendan Chew, the number two singles player, won all three sets 6–3, 6–1, and 6–3.
Sophomore Mathew Wong lost both sets 0–6 and 3–6 before being subbed out with freshman Parker Su, who lost the third set 4–6.
For doubles, seniors Adain Liu and Lucas Cornforth, the number one doubles players, kept up their undefeated win streak by winning 6–4, 6–1, and 6–1.
Sophomores Nico Wise and Jeremy Chen won two sets, 6–4 and 6–0, but then lost the last one, 6–4.
Number three doubles sophomores Rowan Hirahara and Dylan Watanabe played together and lost two sets with scores of 3–6 and 2–6 before Hirahara was subbed out for senior Douglas Kiyan. However, Kiyan and Watanabe lost their set 2–6.
The Tigers improved their overall record to 5–2, beating the Falcons 10–8 in the heads-up match. The Tigers also played Monrovia the next day and won 16–2, as well as beating San Marino on their Senior Night, 12–6.
SPHS is currently at 7–2 overall for the season and 6–0 undefeated in the Rio Hondo League standings, ranking 23rd in Southern California out of about 400 high schools in the section. Their next match was against Monrovia on Thursday, April 24.
“We look to achieve school history and go 8–0 for another first place team finish and back-to-back undefeated seasons with a record of 16 wins and zero losses in the 24-25 and 25-26 seasons combined,” head coach Alex Muresan said.
