Varsity baseball was defeated by La Salle 4-2 in its first preseason game on February 24th. Although a home game was planned, it was played at La Salle due to complications with the Tigers’ field.

The Tigers had an initial advantage, scoring two runs in the early innings. Two singles were hit in the bottom of the first by seniors Matt Walker and Zach Howorth. After Walker stole second base , a throwing error committed by the catcher provided an opportunity for Howorth to score a run.

In the second inning, Sydney Luna advanced to second base following a single and steal. He proceeded to third due to a passed ball, and was batted in on a groundout by senior Alex Fonseca.

La Salle equalized the score during the intermediate innings, as they netted its first run with a RBI on a single in the fourth. A Tiger error in the fifth resulted in an additional run for the Lancers.

During the sixth inning, the Tigers held a tight defense, with a double play by senior Isaac Luevano and Howorth and a diving catch in left field by junior Adam Schroeder.

Both teams stagnated in the late game, until La Salle broke the tie in the top of the eighth. A single and walk gave the Lancers an opportunity to score. The first run was hammered in by a double, which was followed by an error that led to another run. The Tigers failed to score in the bottom of the inning, sealing their first defeat.

The Tigers will seek redemption at an away game against Pasadena on February 27th.
