Color Day — SPHS’s largest spirit day of the year — took place on Friday, Oct. 4.  Students and faculty came dressed in the school colors, orange and black. ASB held a costume competition in the morning, leading up to the fiery assembly. Tiger recaps the day by sharing its favorite costumes and photos.

School spirit high as SPHS celebrates 86th Color Day

SPHS hosted its annual Color Day assembly on Oct. 4 to celebrate school spirit, featuring class competitions, PEP performances, and the costume contest.

Senior Commissioner of Assemblies Zachary Lee opened the assembly, followed by a performance of the National Anthem from senior Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity Officer Amishi Mahadev. After the national anthem, Lee announced that representatives of SPHS and the surrounding schools would be competing in an Ultimate Fighting tournament and held a heated press conference for the representatives.

SPHS Dance put on a western-themed performance following the press conference. The three group-costume winners from each grade level were announced by Lee. Judges rated the costumes early Friday morning, and the winning groups received a candy prize

Senior Commissioner of Activities Danielle Bass led the first class competition: a tug of war between grade levels, with the seniors coming out on top after facing the freshmen class in the final round. PEP performed a new routine showcasing the skills of SPHS’s cheerleaders.

The second class competition had each grade competing in a game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos, concluding with the seniors securing another victory. Following a performance by Color Guard, the teachers joined together for their own dance in which they also showed off their various Color Day outfits to Meghan Trainor’s “Better When I’m Dancin.’”

Senior Class Vice President Samuel Whitman and Lee played the roles of commentators in the mock ultimate fighting tournament between representatives of nearby schools. The final round pitted San Marino against SPHS’s Tiger mascot as the lights dimmed and band raised the excitement through song. The fight concluded with the Tiger finally winning in a dramatic comeback by executing a crane kick.

“Dance put on an incredible performance,” Mahadev said. “[T]he teacher dance was as entertaining to watch as ever. It was an amazing last Color Day assembly for me. The performances blew my mind, and I loved the energy from everyone.”

Whitman concluded the assembly, announcing this year’s Homecoming theme, the 2000s. Band performed the SPHS Alma Mater, continuing the Color Day spirit as students walked out in a sea of black and orange.
