SPHS’s girls tennis team fell just short of a win against La Cañada in a league match on Oct. 11. The match took place at home, and the Tigers lost by two sets, losing 8-10.
Sophomore captain Maya Oniciuc played singles one and swept her three sets. Oniciuc won 6-0, 6-3, and 6-1, defeating La Cañada’s three singles players.
Junior Gwen Culbert won two of her three sets, playing singles two. She was able to win 6-1 in her first, but lost 1-6 to La Canada’s singles two player. In her last set, she won 6-3.
Sophomore Emi Fong, the final South Pasadena singles player, won her first set 6-1, but lost her next two 5-7 and 3-6. Altogether, the singles team won six of the nine sets played, setting the score to 6-3.
The doubles teams only won two of the nine sets against La Cañada’s doubles teams. Doubles one, consisting of senior captain Isha Zafra and junior Claire Chen, defeated the first pair, winning 6-3. However, in their next two sets, they lost 3-6 both times.
Juniors Chloe Luong and Cleo Reeves played doubles two. In their first two sets, they fell 3-6. In their third, they went into a tiebreaker, but ultimately lost 4-7.
Doubles three was played by sophomore Mailani Ramos-Platt and junior Meryl Timmerman. Timmerman and Ramos-Platt lost 3-6 in their first set, but was able to win their second 7-5 after going into a tiebreaker. Their last set had similar results to their first, ending in a 3-6 defeat to conclude the match.
The Tigers’ next match will be on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. against the San Marino Titans at home.
