SPHS announced its newest counselor Joyce Ku-Rodriguez on Friday, Jan. 17. Ku-Rodriguez will take over former counselor Marilyn Garcia’s effective Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Ku-Rodriguez has previously served as a counselor in New York City. Ku-Rodriguez also grew up in California, being selected as a Gates Millenium Scholar.
Ku-Rodriguez’s hiring comes after Garcia announced her personal leave of absence from the SPHS staff until her retirement in June. Garcia served as a teacher, counselor, and administrator for 36 years, working at SPHS for 20 years.
“To be a part of the many SPHS traditions, such as prom, homecoming, powderpuff, Color Day and other activities, has provided me with lifelong memories to cherish,” Garcia said in a letter to the student body. “I will thoroughly miss coming to work every day to see [students’] enthusiastic faces.”
Garcia hopes to spend more time with her family and travel with her husband in retirement.
Ku-Rodriguez will be available in the counseling center on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
