SPHS administration parts ways with athletic director

The SPHS administration announced on Tuesday, Mar. 20 that the high school would be parting ways with Athletic Director (AD) Gregorio Luna. Luna will finish out the rest of the school year in his current position and will remain at SPHS, returning to his former role as a full-time social science teacher.

“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside many wonderful coaches and have witnessed impressive accomplishments by Tiger student-athletes,” Luna said in an email to SPHS coaches.  “Although I’m disappointed with the decision, I respect the need for the SPHS administration to work with an AD that will execute their vision of an athletic program.”

Luna served as the SPHS athletic director for the past five years. Principal Janet Anderson was unable to comment on any reasons as to why Luna was let go from the position. She will lead a search committee for a new AD.

A job posting was sent to SPUSD faculty Wednesday afternoon to begin the search for Luna’s replacement with in-house candidates.

“We want to build on the great programs we already have in athletics,” Anderson said. “A comprehensive plan for the [athletics] department would include community and parent relations, outreach to other schools and colleges, and the day to day management of athletics with regards to coaches and players at SPHS.”
