South Pas residents evacuated after a house on Hanscom Drive partially sinks

A two-story South Pasadena home located on the 1800 block of Hanscom Drive partially sunk underground after a water line ruptured Tuesday night, Mar. 12. Engineers from South Pasadena and Pasadena are continuing to assess the damage to the property and are attempting to mitigate further harm.

The emergency was reported to local authorities after the property’s residents observed their driveway collapsing and heard the sound of flowing water. SPPD officers oversaw evacuation of the block’s residents at approximately 8:40 p.m. No one has been reported injured from the landslide and the damage to the home appears to be minimal.

Officials are preparing for a worst-case scenario, requesting the residents living below the house on Peterson Ave. to evacuate in anticipation of the structure sliding from the edge of the hill. However, they believe the house’s foundation will most likely remain stable, and work is being done to reinforce the point of contact with the hill to prevent sliding.
