SkillsUSA kicked off its first competition of the 2018 season with its annual Regional Leadership and Skills Conferences on January 27 and February 3.

Over 60 SPHS students participated in regionals, with 40 entries in a variety of single and team competitions. This year, the South Pas chapter garnered 10 gold, eight silver, and four bronze medals, with 29 teams qualifying to move on to state competitions.

“Each year the range of competitions depends greatly on what the individual students are interested in; students [this year] are participating in a range of competitions that from leadership to robotics and anywhere in between,” SkillsUSA California President and SPHS senior Victoria Venardi said. “[We’ve] had a surge in underclassmen members, which is amazing to have to help develop and grow both the program and their individual interests throughout the years.”

The advancing teams will compete in California’s State Leadership and Skills Conference in Ontario on April 19-22.
