The girls’ varsity tennis team suffered its first loss of Rio Hondo League play with a score of 3-15 to the San Marino Titans at home on Thursday, September 21. The team begins its season with an 0-1 league record and a 5-2 overall record.

The tough defeat featured a strong performance by singles player Shannon Huang. The junior started off with a 6-1 win in the first round of matches. Huang was trailing in the majority of her second game, which was played against San Marino’s number one doubles player, but came back with a score of 6-7, sending the match into a tie breaker which she won 7-3. Huang’s final match also went into another draw, but this time she fell short of another win. Doubles partners juniors Sheila Li and Rachel Park also added to the Tigers’ score with a 6-1 victory.

The team fared exceptionally well compared to its past years’ performances against the powerful Titan lineup. Freshman Carissa Park scored 3-6, 4-6, and 2-6 in her three games. Seniors Ashley Sato and Sofia Tomasevic also came close to a win with a 5-7 match.

The Tigers will continue the regular season with another home game against Monrovia High School on Tuesday, September 26. Last year, the team won 16-2 against the Wildcats.
