Girls’ golf aims to reestablish league dominance

Last season, the SPHS girls’ golf team lost their undefeated streak of nine consecutive league championships in the Montview League. In the face of this loss, the team is now determined to reestablish its reputation as league champions.

The team concluded the Montview League last season with an overall record of 10-3. The Tigers wavered at the beginning of the year, losing to La Canada in the first game of the season, as they quickly tried to recover from the loss of three key players. The team soon regained their footing and was able to claim decisive victories in their remaining matches, with the exception of Gabrielino. The girls lost twice to the Eagles, thus disqualifying the Tigers to lay claim as the Montview League champions.

The team will compensate this year from the loss of previous captains Bethany Chen and Nicole Srisutham. However, this year’s group will be headed by two equally strong captains with the ability to lead the team to victory: juniors Victoria Tskvitichvili and Lindsey Biggar. Last season, the two players steadily displayed the lowest scores in numerous matches. With Tskvitchvili’s low scoring abilities and Biggar’s consistent stroke counts in the high 30s and low 40s, they will play a significant role in the upcoming season.

With the help of returning players sophomores Christine Mao and Katherine Anthony, the Tigers are striving to dominate the Rio Hondo League this season. Additionally, the team is set on beating Gabrielino to avenge their two losses to them last year.

“I’m excited for our team to be in the new league and to play against stronger teams,” said Anthony. “With a bigger competition and two great captains, I believe that this year will produce a season full of fun. I think last year’s loss has motivated all of us to practice longer and harder, and bond more as a team. The stronger the bond, the better our team will be. So, we’re all determined to work even harder during the season.”

The team will face off against Crescenta Valley at the Altadena Golf Course on Tuesday, August 21 to kick off the start of a new season.
