The Tigers faced the Bishop Mora Salesian Mustangs on Wednesday, March 4. Despite losing 1–0, the Tigers displayed excellent teamwork and managed to prevent most of the Mustangs’ runs.
The first inning began with the Tigers pitching, and started off slow. Towards the end of the first inning, the Mustangs scored one run.
During the second and third innings, the Tigers prevented the Mustangs from obtaining any further runs. Notably, with senior Hanson Chan pitching for the Tigers in the third inning, senior Isaiah Esquivel caught a pop-fly and threw it home to prevent the Mustangs from completing a run, leaving the score 1–0.
The Mustangs were quickly dealt with early in the fourth quarter. Esquivel got walked due to the absence of the opposing team’s pitcher. Chan’s arm was a cannon, pitching at 74 miles per hour. Later, the Mustangs hit the ball to right field. In one final effort, outfield senior Phil Malatesta made an incredible throw which prevented the Mustangs from scoring a run. Senior Aaron Kawasaki hit a sacrifice fly ball to advance the Mustang runners to second and third base. This put them in scoring position; however, the inning ended with the score 1–0.
During the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, the game was less action-packed. However, Chan managed to strike out the last batter and send the Mustangs back to their dugout. Once the seventh inning ended, the game concluded with the final score 1–0.
“There’s a lot of improvements we can make, and I hope we can look back on today and [think of it almost as] an improvement type of day,” Malatesta said.
The Tigers will face the Temple City Rams in an away game on Tuesday, March 10, in Temple City’s league opener.
