Badminton overpowers San Gabriel in league opener

The reigning CIF champion badminton team breezed past the San Gabriel Matadors by a score of 16-5 in its first league game of the season on Wednesday, March 6. With the win, the team advances to 1-0 in the young league season.

The Tigers displayed their dominance quickly after the game begun with powerful smashes and clears. Juniors Emily Choi and team captain Charles Liu, as well as sophomores Jonathan Ng and Joan Choi, displayed great team chemistry in their mixed doubles matches, covering for each other and anticipating their opponent’s next move. The four individuals kept their momentum in their singles matches as well, which tallied another four wins. Juniors Steven Wu and Jamilah Hah also contributed another win in their mixed doubles break point.

Girls doubles team sophomore Kimberly Hsueh and Hah stumbled in their second match due to a broken racket, but still added two more victories for the Tigers. From the two boys doubles team, Wu and sophomores Andrew Cheung, Matthew Tan, and Shane Yu all overpowered their Matador opponents, adding two points to the team’s score.

The Tigers will face off against San Marino, whom they had lost to once last season, at home this Friday, March 8.
