South Pasadena Cross Country boys’ and girls’ teams both placed third in the second Rio Hondo meet at Hahamongna Park in La Cañada this Thursday, October 16. The boys’ team fell short against San Marino High School, who finished first and La Cañada High School, who trailed right behind and placed second. Despite senior captain Cullen Irvine’s star performance, who ran the fastest individual time of 16 minutes and 11 seconds in the three mile track, the Tigers were not able to secure the victory.
“Winning a meet is purely determined by team effort and performance,” Irvine said. “An individual cannot singlehandedly lead a whole team into victory and that is why we so strongly value encouraging each other.”
Junior Kyle Oda also input his reaction to the meet by describing the team’s attributes.
“Our team is still learning and gaining experience as most members are underclassmen whereas other Rio Hondo school teams consist of returning Varsity upperclassmen,” Oda said. “Our ability to consistently produce second and third place results in league meets is very impressive, when taking into account of such youth in the team.”
The Tigers’ upcoming third and final league meet is scheduled on Thursday, November 6 at Lacy Park in San Marino.
