Parents were informed of a positive case of coronavirus within an SPHS athletics team/club in an email by principal John Eldred on Friday, Aug. 6th.

Administration was made aware of the case on Thursday, Aug. 5 and began contacting exposed athletes. Information regarding the athlete who tested positive or the team was not enclosed to the public but Eldred confirmed that everyone in contact with the infected individual was notified and given instructions to get tested, and quarantine as per LA County Department of Health protocols.

Although this was a setback on the path to normalcy, SPHS Athletic Director Anthony Chan ensured that athletics plan to continue the way they were organized last school year. This included students being divided into 25 pods, health check-ins, and forms prior to attending a practice or game. Additionally, the athletes will have to stand six feet apart while wearing masks. With the return of school rapidly approaching, SPHS athletics plan to stay up and running, while following these COVID regulations.

“As seasons begin, we will have weekly testing for our teams to ensure the safety of our players, coaches, families, and community,” Chan said. “Our goal is to give our student-athletes the opportunity to participate, practice, and compete while keeping safety in the forefront.”
