On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the SPUSD School Board held its monthly meeting. The meeting began with a reading and discussion of the newly proposed Board Policy 0441, which addresses generative artificial intelligence.
The district’s Ed Tech Committee set forth potential Generative AI policy recommendations, with guidance from the sample policies of the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California School Boards Association (CSBA). In addition, the Ed Tech Committee, with SPUSD administrative supervision, proposed policy tenets based upon comprehensive AI surveys of staff, parents, and students, sample policies from other states and countries, sample practices from other school districts and universities, and the year-long
development of the Generative AI framework for faculty and staff.
After the Board members thoroughly reviewed the proposed policy, they suggested revisions that will be presented during the next Board meeting in November. At this meeting, Board Policy 0441 is expected to be agendized as an action item, meaning Board members will review the revisions, make additional suggestions, and potentially vote on the policy.
A common trend between the public comments showed how generative artificial intelligence requires constant critical evaluation. So, the Board wants to ensure that the educational system remains focused on authentic, human-centric inquiry. This means that the human user remains ultimately responsible for all decisions and content, and that GenAI should be tempered by adherence to academic integrity and data privacy.
Board members expressed interest in refining specific points to ensure that the use of Generative AI is explained thoroughly to students and faculty members and clearly by adding examples so all users are fully informed and understand how to properly use it as a tool for learning rather than for dishonest purposes. Another impactful suggestion was made by student Board member Batia Lou, who suggested that an annual student forum may help the community understand how the policy is being practiced by students. Community members with young children expressed interest in blocking Generative AI, which is current SPUSD practice on district-provided devices.
The school board covered many different matters. The topic of Generative AI was a topic that was greatly discussed. Policy 0441 was a highly proposed policy by both staff and parents. Not only is the use of AI being regulated, but it is also being taught to students how to use it properly.
