The girls’ varsity tennis team fell to Dos Pueblos High School on the road by a score of 7-11 on Tuesday, November 3. This was the first and final round of CIF that the team will compete in for the 2015 season.
South Pas was dominant in doubles play as the Tigers won six of nine. Part of this success was due to the fact that the team strategically placed strong singles players on doubles teams. As a result, each doubles team claimed two of three games. Team captain sophomore Molly Round and junior Anya Nicolaides came close to a three game sweep of the opposition, but could not overcome a tough tie breaker as the duo lost 7-9. In their other two matches, however, Round and Nicolaides displayed great dominance by winning 6-2 and 6-1.
A strong performance by freshman Sheila Li was one of the team’s silver linings of this match, as she was the only singles player to win a game. Li spent most of her season on JV, but proved that she can compete with varsity in this match.
The team is still hopeful for the future, despite this tough loss.
“This season was a great learning experience for all of the players,” junior Ashley Huang said, “We were able to have a positive record with both a new coach and new players.”
Although this is the end for the girls’ tennis team in 2015, look for them to greatly improve next year as the squad will remain relatively similar with no current seniors. In 2016, the team will be much more experienced and have a strong chance for a third consecutive CIF run.
