Story by Tiger 2024–25 Editorial Board
CORRECTION
In the October print issue, distributed on Oct. 29, 2024, Tiger mistakenly presented misleading information in the article “A struggle for the band room title.”
Tiger staff mistakenly referred to Former Principal Janet Anderson as Dr. Anderson. This is incorrect; her title was Principal Anderson.
Additionally, it was implied that the students’ change.org petition was the reason that the topic was placed onto the school board calendar. However, the topic was added to the board agenda after a request from Howard Crawford’s two daughters in late June, which came after the petition. Music Booster parents initially brought up the idea, and after talking to administration, they asked Crawford’s daughters to create the petition to prevent blowback against the instrumental music program. The board then reviewed and placed the topic on the August board agenda.
The quote from SPHS band vice president Chaemin Lim, “[When we] initially went and talked it out, [the school board] seemed very on board with us and then [that] was it,” is lacking context. There was no dialogue between Karissa Uko, the speaker of the public comment, and school board members. As such, the parties never “talked it out,” as stated in the original article.
The article also stated that the school board deflected the topic of renaming the band room during the board’s August meeting. In reality, the board touched on the item, but quickly moved on — a gesture that implied no further action. Instead of renaming the band room, board members offered recommendations for other ways to honor Crawford, which included the aforementioned scholarship fund, among other ideas.
An update from November 21 has been removed due to inaccuracies.
