Boys’ soccer lost to La Puente High School 2-1 during the first round of CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs on Friday, Feb. 14. The two teams were neck and neck for a majority of the game, but the La Puente Warriors managed a last-minute goal to beat the Tigers.
The first half was relatively uneventful. Possession went back and forth between the teams with neither team possessing a clear advantage. Both teams made attempts to score, but neither was successful.
With two minutes remaining in the half, the Tigers were awarded a penalty shot after being fouled by a La Puente player. Senior midfielder Emilio Gonzalez took the opportunity to score the first goal of the game, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
The second half was more lively. 15 minutes in, the Warriors managed to break through South Pasadena’s defense and scored a goal, making the score even at 1-1.
South Pasadena spent the remaining time trying to retake their advantage, but they were not able to get past La Puente’s defense. The two teams were still tied with just six minutes remaining in the game when a La Puente player suddenly scored, putting them in the lead 2-1.
The Tigers were not able to score another goal, giving the victory to La Puente. This loss brought an end to boys’ soccer’s season.
