The boys and girls’ varsity swim team competed in the Rio Hondo League Finals on Friday, May 6 at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. The Tigers were able to place in the top three in several categories against all Rio Hondo League Schools.
The boys’ swimmers were able to garner top spots in many of the competitive events. Senior Aaron Ogita placed second in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.49 seconds. Junior Jacob Mullin earned first in the 100 Backstroke by a wide margin and was the only South Pas swimmer to place in that event. Senior William Lau showcased an impressive performance in the 100 Freestyle and took first. Freshman Jaden Mulllin managed third place in the 500 Freestyle, being the only freshman to place in that competition. Jacob Mullin would earn first in the 100 Butterfly, making him the most dominant South Pas swimmer of the day. The only other swimmer to place in two events would be Lau, who also earned second place in the 200 Freestyle. Ogita, Lau, Mullen, and sophomore Evan Yerian combined to take first in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
Senior Laura Mendenhall crushed her opponents in the 200 Freestyle, as the second place swimmer finished more than 6 seconds after. Junior Kelsey Sedgwick solidified the Tiger’s dominance in the category with a third place finish. Senior Jocelyn Jo took first in the 200 Individual Medley, while sophomore Eileen Zenas was a close second. Jo also earned first place in the 100 Breaststroke to narrowly defeat a San Marino swimmer. South Pas managed a third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a team consisting of Zenas, Jo, Mendenhall, and junior Janica Crisostomo.
The remaining swimmers will compete at the CIF prelims on Friday, May 13 at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.
