From March 13 to March 14 the track and field team traveled to Redondo Beach to compete in a two day competition with teams from all over California and even some traveling from as far as Texas and Michigan. Despite the majority of juniors on the team not being present due to taking the SAT, the Tigers overall did exceptional.
During the girls’ varsity 800m, senior Rose Vandevelde placed 52nd at 2:31, followed by her teammates, seniors Amanda Cortes and senior Eva Stephenson, at 2:38 and 2:49 respectively. Additionally, during the girls’ varsity heat five 1600m, junior Olivia Mendez placed 8th at 5:51 followed by senior Cat Brewer 6:02.
During a girls’ varsity 4×800 relay, Vandevelde, Stephenson, junior Alice Rowley, and Cortes placed 20th at a time of 10:49, followed by their B team, sophomore Kaitlynn Bromley, Mendez, Brewer, and sophomore Ella Zhang at 11:37.
During another relay called a DMR (Distance Medley Relay), the same team with Stephenson, Vandevelde, Rowley, and Cortes placed 21st at a time of 14:21. A DMR is a relay with four different distances in the order of 1200m, the 400m, the 800m, and the 1600m.
As for throws, jumps, and sprints, senior Madeline Park placed seventh during the triple jump at 34-05. Park also placed seventeenth in the long jump, following her teammate junior Evan Taylor, who placed fifth. Junior Lily Kimura placed second in her high jump at 1.55 meters.
For boys’ varsity, senior Aidan Chavez placed 32nd at the 400m and was also the only SPHS sprinter who attended the meet. For the distance events, junior Michael Scarince placed fifth in his 1600m run at 4:12 and also placed fourth in his 3200m run at 9:09. Senior Kai Tilley placed 43rd in the 1600m at 4:26 and also placed 14th at 9:22 during his 3200m. Senior Dylan Shugg placed 103rd in his 1600m at 4:39 and 17th at 9:24 during his 3200m. Senior Ayden Yusef followed placing 115th in the 1600 at 4:43.
In the 4×800 relay the mens A team with Yusef, freshman Evan Chiang, senior Joshua Jakosalem, and senior Charles Hudson placed 25th at 8:54. As for the DMR the mens A team with Yusef, Hudson, Jakosalem, and sophomore Oliver Chiam placed 27th with a time of 11:35.
The distance team later competed at the Arroyo High School on Saturday, March 21, while the sprinters competed at the ASICS Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational the same day.
