When senior Lucas Fox moved to South Pasadena from a suburb of Chicago in 2012, nearly everything in his life changed. He did not know anyone, and beginning life in an entirely different part of the country seemed daunting. But one thing that carried over from his previous life was his love for the game of basketball.

Fox joined the middle school basketball team soon after he moved, and made a few of his first friends, including teammate senior Stone Franco. A year later, he began his high school career by making the junior varsity team. Part of what made him stand out was his physical splay, which he attributes to his background.

“In Chicago, people were a lot bigger and taller than me,” Fox said, “I had to learn how to play physically. It also helped me with my jump shot, since I couldn’t drive in as much.”

Now a starting forward for the varsity team, Fox is the ideal dual threat: a dominant physical presence in the paint as well as a smooth outside shooter. He also plays an important mental role on the team, motivating his teammates every day.

“Fox brings an intensity to the game like no other player,” Franco said. “He encourages us to play hard in practice and even harder during games.”

While Fox is currently one of the leaders of the team, he was once one of the players being mentored. He cites SPHS alum Alex Nakagawa as his greatest influence.

“Alex has always pushed me to be my best,” Fox said. “He’s a great leader, and I really admire him.”

This season, Fox and the rest of the team hope to build upon their success found in previous years.
