Girls’ basketball concludes Thanksgiving break with a 2-2 record at SM/SP Tournament

The girls’ basketball team garnered fifth place overall out of eight teams in the 2015-2016 San Marino/South Pasadena Varsity Girls’ Basketball Classic Tournament over Thanksgiving break. The Tigers played teams ranging from Division I to Division V, placing third in their pool of four, and leaving the tournament with an overall record of 2-2.

The Division III Tigers fell to Division I Burbank High School 49-52 in the their first game on Monday, though they were victorious against Division IV Maranatha High School with a 60-44 win in the following matchup on Tuesday. The squad lost to Ribét Academy, a Division V team, on Friday 33-53, which put the Tigers at in third place in their bracket. South Pas would then defeat Division III Pasadena by a margin of 14 points with a score of 41-27 on Saturday to secure fifth place in the tournament. Ribét would go on to beat San Marino in the championship game, as each team was seeded first in its respective bracket.

“This was definitely more of a learning experience for us as we are a new team,” junior Jalynne Li said. “The tournament was just a stepping stone for us to improve and play coherently as a team, and we can only get better from here on out.”

The Tigers’ first preseason match is at home on Wednesday, December 2 against Bassett High School. South Pas hopes to open the season with a win, and improve its overall record to 3-2.
