The annual Senior College Awareness Night hosted by the South Pasadena High School counseling department took place on Wednesday, October 1, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The counselors offered resources and information to both parents and students about aspects of the college application process.

Assistant principal Ms Ginger Merritt started the night by introducing the workshop and the guidance counselors present, Ms Marylin Garcia and Ms Nan Ng. Garcia then hosted an information session covering essential information ranging from the college application process to financial aid. Much of the presentation consisted of slides taken from the mandatory senior meetings last week.

“Providing parents with college awareness night definitely helps them by really easing their mind and letting them know the college application process and how to help and support their student,” Ng said.

The rest of the night consisted of independent workshops with representatives from PCC, UC’s and CSU’s, and Marymount College, representing the independent colleges. For the UC and CSU workshop, SPHS alumni and UCLA students Trent Kajikawa and Chloe Acebo introduced the basics of applying to UC’s as well as their personal experiences with the college application process.

“I hope people come out of College Aware with more knowledge and a better background to make decisions,” Garcia said. “I want parents to know that [the counselors] are here and available for students and parents whenever they need us.”
The next information night will be Financial Aid Night, which will be in the auditorium on October 23 at 7 p.m.
