On Monday, May 8, SPHS varsity tennis claimed victory against the Cerrito Dons, tying the games 9-9 but winning in points by final score of 85-80. The Tigers advanced to CIF semifinals for the first time in school history, continuing the Tigers’ historic run.
The Tigers took an early 4-2 lead. However, the Dons caught up and tied the game 4-4, then 6-6, and 7-7. The Dons kept pace and took a 9-8 lead towards the end of the game. Still, the Tigers made a late game comeback with sophomore Zachary Lee and junior Christopher Wong winning their doubles matches and senior Finn McMillan prevailing in his singles match 6-2.
Coach Krista Gale spoke of the Tigers’ triumph and perseverance against a challenging opponent while being heckled by the other team.
“…The other singles [players] were particularly challenging. A couple of doubles teams got under our guys’ skin a little bit. But, ultimately, we prevailed,” coach Gale.
The next matchup, on Wednesday, May 10, will pit the Tigers against the Tesoro Titans in CIF semifinals at home.
