The girls’ soccer team fell 1-0 against the La Cañada Spartans away in their second matchup of the 2015-2016 season on Friday, February 5. The Tigers triumphed in their first meeting, but after this recent loss, dropped their good placement in the Rio Hondo League standings. The team entered the game tied for third place against the Spartans, but the tough loss has moved them down with its now 4-4 league record.
The Tigers made a strong defensive effort, but failed to complete any plays on the offensive end of the field. The game proved to be evenly matched, with both teams constantly battling for possession of the ball. However, the Spartans gained the advantage after a strong attack in the first half which led to their first and only goal. On the play, the La Cañada offense split South Pasadena’s defense by spreading into a wide formation. One of the Spartan players took advantage of an open opportunity and kicked the ball to the far side to score. The Tigers made many attempts to tie up the game and came close, but ultimately failed to eliminate the Spartan lead.
“The effort has always been there throughout the season,” junior midfielder Megan Wong said. “This loss just makes us even hungrier.”
The team plans to regain its position in league in its next game at Temple City High School on Monday, February 8.
