The varsity girls’ softball team fell to the Monrovia Wildcats at home on Tuesday, April 25 by a score of 6-4. South Pas showcased a strong performance early in game, and were only narrowly defeated towards the close by some key Wildcat plays. The girls fared much better at this second showdown against Monrovia than their previous– when they were mercied 10-0. This markedly clear improvement places the team at a 3-13 overall record and a 1-6 league record.
The Monrovia game was filled with drama and suspense, as the score fluctuated each inning. Right off the bat, it was clear that the South Pas girls came to dominate. In comparison to their earlier losses in season, the Tigers played much more efficiently and smoothly– working together as one unit rather than individual players.
A few players played integral roles in their slim loss. Senior Adrianna Ramirez batted consistently well, giving the team many of their runs. Defensively, senior catcher Olivia Nouriani remained cool and collected throughout the course of the match, quickly throwing the ball across the diamond to tap out opposing Wildcats. With both a strong offense and defense, the Tigers were able to stay ahead of the Wildcats for the first four innings.
The Tigers’ good fortune faltered in the fifth inning when a Wildcat was able to hit a homerun, turning the tides of the game. Following the runs, the Tigers kept up the ante on defense in the sixth and seventh innings– conceding little to no runs– but also could not recover their lost points.
“I’m very proud of the girls’ game today,” commented head coach Kayla Moore. “They came out the gate way more aggressive than they have before. Defensively, they did excellent keeping the balls in front of us and offensively, we made many more runs than before.”
The Tigers will take this close loss as they dive into a match with their biggest rivals, San Marino, at away game on Wednesday, April 26.
