The South Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education held its final summer session just nine days before the first day of the 2015-2016 school year on Tuesday, August 11. The Board discussed the future of the construction of a new science building on the South Pasadena High School campus and its plan of action to provide additional relief regarding the space limitations in the current science building.
The Board motioned and approved entering an agreement with SVA Architects in order to begin the development and planning of the new science building, which is expected to include six classrooms and four science labs.
As the actual construction is still a long ways away, plans for a more immediate and temporary solution to the problem were brought up, as the Board approved to enter into a lease agreement with Mobile Modular, a company that provides portable buildings for temporary and permanent use.
“We have 10 science teachers and 49 sections of science, so what occurs then is there are some science teachers that have to share classrooms,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoff Yantz said. “[Teachers] have to go to great lengths to continue to provide the quality education, but obviously its not ideal. So by providing these temporary portables, it will provide some relief to the impact [on the teachers].”
The temporary rooms are scheduled to be installed before the end of the first semester, in order to provide the necessary preparations for their use during the second semester.
