English teacher Mr. James Asher passed away Thursday, June 1, after a brief illness. His current students were notified of his passing during first period this morning in the library projection room. Administration, staff, and counselors were present to offer students support.

Mr. Asher spent seventeen years on campus as an English teacher during the school year, a computer instructor during the summer, and a tennis coach for both the girls’ and boys’ teams during their seasons.

He was beloved by students and staff alike. His friendly voice and the way that he cared for the school will be among his legacies.

Mr. Asher was well-known to build his classes around his students’ needs and interests. He was compassionate and welcoming, with a heart for teaching.

The lesson I take away from him is the importance of being positive to everyone at all times, because you never know what’s going to happen,” senior Ellie Kutzer said.  “He taught us that in the ultimate way.”

Mr. Asher will be dearly missed by his students, colleagues, and family.

I went to elementary, middle school and High School with Jim…We lived and breathed tennis everyday in Monroe Mi where he grew up. I hope his students will never forget him….I never have.
