South Pas varsity football secured its first league win of the season on Friday, with a 41-6 thrashing of La Cañada. The victory gives South Pas a 1-2 league record heading into its final game. The Tigers dominated the front line throughout the game, cashing in for six rushing touchdowns against the Spartans.
South Pas wasn’t able to score on its opening drive, but the Tigers found their rhythm shortly after in their following sequence. The team marched down the field with a steady, well-sustained drive, concluding with a 10 yard read-option touchdown run by senior Sidney Luna-Long.
An interception by senior defensive back Glen Levstik set the Tigers up with solid field position, which resulted in a Fernando Sornoso touchdown run from 15 yards out.
South Pas struck twice more before the half, extending its lead to 27-0 following touchdowns runs from Luna-Long and junior quarterback Justin Huff.
South Pas came out of the halftime break and continued to add to their big lead. A 72 touchdown yard run by Sornoso and a Thomas Avila interception distanced the Tigers even further from the struggling Spartans. Senior running back Jackson Totleben also got in on the action with a 1 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior cornerback Pablo Gaeta recorded an interception and a fumble recovery, leading the Tigers in an effective game plan against the Spartan offensive attack.
“We’ve got a some confidence coming back with this win,” South Pas head coach Jeff Chi said. “Hopefully it will carry over into our homecoming game in two weeks.”
The Tigers will hope to carry the momentum from the win through a bye week as they face San Marino at home in their last game of the season on November 3rd. The rival Titans are coming off a 49-19 win against Temple City and will test South Pas in its homecoming showdown.
“We have a bye week, so that will help us to prepare for San Marino,” Huff said. “I think we’ll be ready for them.”
