Boys’ water polo defeats La Cañada in Summer preseason

With the Summer season winding down, South Pas dominated its Rio Hondo rival, La Cañada on Thursday, July 20.

The Tigers started the game strong, as sophomore Evan Kowal scored the first goal of the game. Goalie Uday Sidhu blocked four shots, only allowing two goals. South Pas continued to play strong throughout the first quarter, finishing with a 3-2 lead.  

South Pas further displayed their superiority against La Canada with three more goals scored by Kowal and senior Andres Limon.  La Cañada tried to keep up with South Pas’ lead, attempting two shots and scoring one goal. The Tigers finished the first half with a comfortable lead, at 6-3.

La Cañada returned from the half determined to cut the deficit. Fiercely swimming, the scored a goal almost immediately after the start of the quarter. Minutes later they put in a second goal before South Pas even had a shot opportunity.  The Tigers immediately bounced back, with assists from sophomore Hyun Kim, to Kowal putting back three more goals for South Pas, ending the quarter up 11-5.

There were few shots taken by both teams in the fourth, and no goals scored.  Halfway through the quarter senior Owen Carlson, received a yellow card for misconduct, unable to play the remainder of the game.  La Cañada took advantage of his absence, scoring multiple goals. South Pas immediately reacted, with incoming seniors Jasper Lee, Gabe Davison, and Andres Limon finishing the game with heightened offensive presence.

The team is confident and strong going into the season, starting official preseason play August 22nd, against Montebello.
