Boys’ golf shows improvement in RHL play

This season, the boys’ golf team displayed a vast and impressive improvement from its previous season. In 2016, the Tigers suffered many losses, ending with an overall record of 2-10. This year, the players primarily aimed to focus on increasing their win total from the previous year.

This goal was evident throughout the Tiger’s performance this year. The South Pas boys clearly buckled down and with the help of a handful of talented newcomers, ending with a league record of 5-3 and an overall record of 8-6. With a few exceptions, the Tigers consistently brought in lower stroke counts with each game. The team even managed to score below 200 strokes several times, an impressive feat that South Pas golf had not accomplished in many years. Throughout the duration of the season, the Tigers held their ground and narrowly won games against difficult opponents such as San Marino.

A key player for South Pas this season was sophomore Josh Ramos. The talented golfer was the driving force behind the Tigers, constantly bringing in exceptionally low scores. In addition to Ramos, seniors Matthew Wright, Elliott Lee, and Andrew Son played consistently well, assisting in lowering the score counts. Besides these regular players, the rest of the team fluctuated. Most players showed consistent and gradual improvement. Towards the end of the season, junior Sidney Luna-Long made his place on the team and helped the Tigers establish themselves as one of the stronger contenders within the Rio Hondo League.

The team ended the season by placing third overall in league. With this, top scorers Ramos, Lee, Wright, and Son were set to move on to Rio Hondo Preliminaries.

On Tuesday, May 2, these players attended the preliminaries. Lee, Wright, and Son were unable to make the top cutoff but still were placed on the second team, the second-most ranking within the tournament. Ramos however, scored a 74 in prelims and a 74 in finals for a total of 148 strokes. Passing the cutoff, he was placed in the first team and individually placed second only to the tournament MVP, San Marino’s Mason Chiu. Ramos will move on to play in the CIF Regional on Monday, May 8, at the River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.
