Seventy-six students received a total of 124 Western Region awards after freshmen and juniors from Ms Diane Shires’ English classes, as well as other independent students from SPUSD, submitted their works to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Regional Competitions in December.

Nineteen of these students received the Gold Key Award, the highest honor of the competition. The winners of this award will advance to the national competition and will have the chance to earn scholarships or cash prizes. Their work will also be on display at The New School’s Parsons School for Design and at Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York.

“I’m very excited for my work to be showcased in a national competition. It allows me to see how I compare against other young writers across the country,” junior Andrew Son said. “I was very surprised by how my work was seen on a competitive scale, and how my hard work paid off as I won a Gold Key Award.”

Over 500,000 students across the nation submitted various artistic and literary works to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Regional Competitions. The national competition winners will be announced on March 14 and those selected will be able to attend national ceremonies to be honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
