The girls’ varsity golf team hopes to meet or even exceed last year’s success in the upcoming 2015-2016 season. Last season, the Tigers went 7-0 in league and 13-0 overall, with three of the girls qualifying for CIF Northern Individual Regionals. The team placed 8th out of 22 schools in Team CIF. The girls enjoyed a very successful run last year, but without three of the five starters from last year’s squad, it will be interesting to see how coach Richard Goto rebuilds his young team back into an ambitious, undefeated girls’ golf team.

“We are very young, however, I am confident that our ladies will do just fine. It is difficult to think we will not have our seniors,” coach Goto said, “difficult to think that other teams may actually have a chance. I have been spoiled for over 8 years with the quality of our ladies. I am confident we will do fine.”

Since the girls lost six seniors to graduation, many of the rising juniors will have to step up. The Tigers do not have an official roster yet, but the lone senior of the team, Christine Abbott, and junior Caitlyn Yamashita are the set captains for this upcoming season. The remaining roster consists of Emily Swanson, Bethany Chen, Sara Hasegawa, Nicole Srisutham, Clara Wong, Candy Xu, Anastasia Sun, and Joanne Wan. The team’s lack of experience does not discourage captain Abbott as she expects to go undefeated again in the Rio Hondo League.

“We have a young team but I am confident that we can still maintain the level of success we’ve been accustomed to,” Abbott said. “I expect our team to go undefeated and win league again. Our goal is to make it to CIF and place in the top 10.”

The Tigers begin their season in the first week of September. Their first game was on Thursday, September 1, at Polytechnic School against the Panthers, with the Tigers coming out victorious 235-273.
