Girls’ and boys’ track started their season off strong on Thursday with a win over Alhambra High School. The Tigers took down the Moors in all four divisions. The boys’ final score was 65-43, and the girls dominated 104-24.

The win didn’t come without preparation, as the Tigers have been practicing daily for the past five months. Tough training has taken place on the track and around the infamous Bank Street route, an uphill road which runners have been scaling.

Returning captains are stepping up to help lead the team, although official captains have not been appointed. Seniors Nina Acebo, Justin Fernandez, and Sam Anuakpado are not only helping with drills and warm ups, but also organizing the athletes and aid the coaches. The team is young overall, as they have been for a few years, with many returners, and a particularly strong core of experienced seniors.

“The current seniors have always been a powerful class, and now that we’ve had so many years of training and have been able to mature, we should come out very strong,” Anuakapado said. “That should be a strong asset for us.”

The squad lost few seniors this year, and the squad has shrunk in size to a more competitive group. The boys’ team has placed first in league for the past two years, and girls’ for the past four. All four divisions of the team – girls’ and boys’ frosh and varsity teams – won league undefeated last season, and the squad doesn’t doubt they can do it again.

“There are several guys and girls that I see going very far,” said Acebo. “We’ve been working hard all year and I am confident we can win league again.”
