Girls volleyball destroyed rivals San Marino in three sets on Thursday, Oct. 3. The Tiger easily overpowered the Titans, allowing South Pas to experiment with lineups and utilize the underclassmen and reserves more often. The team remains undefeated and first in the Rio Hondo League.

In the first set, sophomore Kennedy Taylor and freshman Ava Dorny helped South Pas secure an early lead against San Marino.

The Titans managed to score a few points, but junior Sydney Abundo and sophomore Abby Garner rattled off a string of perfect serves to pull ahead. The Tigers won the set when sophomore Kennedy Taylor delivered yet another ace, bringing the final set score to 25-15.

South Pas quickly pulled ahead in the second set and relaxed, allowing San Marino to make a comeback, but the Tigers were able to pull through.

Throughout the long rallies, Dorny and freshman Sofia Reyes boasted excellent blocks and serves. The Tigers received some help from the Titans’ mistakes towards the end of the set, and they finally won, 25-21, when a San Marino spike hit the net.

In the final set, the Tigers gave it their all and beat San Marino. Junior Lola Foord was key to the third set victory, spiking balls back to back and making multiple kills.

The score was often tied, but with the help of senior Mikaela Noonan’s killer serves, South Pas was able to stay ahead. In the end, another inaccurate Titan spike landed out of bounds, handing the Tigers the set, 25-19.

Girls volleyball hopes to continue its winning streak when it travels to play Monrovia on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
