Girls’ tennis wins second straight preseason game

SPHS girls’ varsity tennis team faced off against John Burroughs High School in Burbank on Thursday, August 30 in a road preseason, game. The girls swiftly defeated John Burroughs, triumphing with a score of 12-6.

In singles, senior Shannon Huang easily defeated the competition in each of her three sets with scores of 6-1 and two additional sets of 6-0. Singles two, sophomore Carissa Park, conquered Burbank in all three sets, winning two sets 6-0 and her third set by a score of 6-1. Meanwhile, singles three, senior Rachel Park, won two sets 6-2 but struggled to overcome the Indians in her third set, dropping the game 6-4.

The doubles players struggled to defeat Burbank’s coordinated play, winning four sets to Burroughs’ five. Doubles team one, junior Teryn Kum and sophomore Kimberly Hsueh, narrowly took one set from the Indians with a score of 7-5, and almost won a second set but fell 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Sophomore Olivia Reed and senior Sheila Li, doubles team two, defeated John Burroughs in one set, gaining a score of 6-3. Sophomores Talulla Chow and Skylar Cornforth secured two sets 6-3 and 6-0.

The girls will look to improve their 3-1 record when they play away against Polytechnic on Tuesday, September 4.
