Girls tennis dominates against Monrovia

The girls’ tennis team secured its first league victory 16-2 against the Monrovia Wildcats at home on Tuesday, September 26. The team’s Rio Hondo record now sits evenly at 1-1, while the overall record is 6-2.

Singles players junior Shannon Huang and freshman Carissa Park both swept all three of their matches with scores of either 6-0 or 6-1. Junior Deanna Als was absent from the game,so freshman Lauren Galles filled Als’ usual singles slot. Galles won her first match 6-0 but could not pull ahead of Monrovia in the other two.

The doubles players were victorious in all nine of their matches. Partners junior Rachel Park and sophomore Teryn Kum breezed by their opponents with scores of 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1. Freshman Skylar Cornforth paired with senior Ashley Sato, whose usual partner, senior Sofia Tomasevic, was out this game. The duo also swept their games with 6-1 or 6-0 scores. Freshman teammates Tallula Chow and Kimberly Hsueh won their three matches with scores of 6-0, 6-0, and 6-3.

The team continues the regular season on Thursday, September 28 at home against La Cañada. Last year, the Tigers lost to the Spartans 7-11 at home and 6-12 away.
